5 Ways to Bounce Back
Resiliency is a vital skill to have if you want to thrive in life. Resiliency is the ability for someone to bounce back from adversity; it is the act of getting back to baseline after being challenged or stretched. Increasing resiliency not only allows us to overcome difficult times but it also increases confidence, increases a sense of control in our lives, increases wellbeing and can decrease depression, anxiety, and overall stress. So how do we increase our resiliency? Here are 5 ways to help bounce back from life’s hardships.
This can be particularly difficult when life is not going well. After all how often do we express gratitude for even having a job when our boss is a bully or being thankful for having health insurance after a nasty accident? Here is the good news. The simple act of searching for gratitude increases wellbeing and resilience so even if you struggle to feel grateful or find something to be grateful for simply thinking about gratitude and searching for it helps.
Find Your Funny Bone
Yes, laughter is often the best medicine. So many times in life we are faced with obstacles and we lose all sense of humor. If we can discover different ways to approach adversity with light-heartedness and laughter we can increase joy, decrease tension and stress, and overall improve our well being.
There is a ton of research demonstrating the benefits of being outside. It is not just the fresh air and the vitamin D it is about connection. When we spend quality time in nature we feel a greater connection to the world as a whole, if gives us confidence, reduces anxiety and depression, and can shift our perspectives to more helpful and productive patterns.
This can be through volunteering, offering support to a neighbor, and even doing something kind for your spouse. Performing acts of kindness and demonstrating compassion increases serotonin and oxytocin in the brain leading to feelings of satisfaction and happiness. Doing things for others also helps put our lives into perspective and develop a stronger sense of meaning and purpose in life leading to higher resiliency.
Yes, you read that right. When adversity happens we often try to resist it and avoid it. This simply creates more stress in our lives. When we embrace and accept adversity, however, we are able to see negative events as learning experiences and grow from them. Embracing adversity does not mean rolling over and giving up or ignoring the pain it creates it is about accepting it, as it is, and using it to your advantage as much as you can. Obviously, this is easier said than done but when we are able to do it we can drastically increase our resiliency.
